Professor Sherridan Schwartz is a native Houstonian from a long line of distinguished Texans.
The daughter of two career Houston educators, Sherridan took an early interest in the administration of Houston's schools when her late father was appointed to the HISD School Board's 'Tri-Ethnic' Committee. The goal of this committee was to explore challenges and guide the process of fully desegregating Houston's public schools. Professor Schwartz accompanied her father to HISD School Board meetings for years as the district wrestled with issues of the minority achievement gap, Minority to Majority transfers, and funding challenges.
During her career in corporate communications working and training Fortune 500 companies, Professor Schwartz was heavily involved in grassroots community organizing and in advocating for the rights of citizens.
Realizing that education is the key to improving quality of life for all citizens on a local level, and inspired by the late Congressman Mickey Leland, she began studying and working at Texas Southern University (where she has been for more than ten years, as both staff and now, faculty.)
Professor Schwartz teaches Political Science at the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs at Texas Southern University.
Her graduate research focused on the intersection of education, politics, and finance in Texas.
Professor Schwartz has also worked as a staff member at both Rice University and University of Houston.
Professor Schwartz has earned a Bachelors degree in Journalism, a Masters of Public Administration and Masters of Science in Health Education. She has done further doctoral study and has earned post-baccalaureate education credits in Elementary Education, Spanish Education and Health Education, including time spent studying/student teaching at HISD's Lockhart and TSU Lab Charter School.
From City Hall, to HISD Administration Building to the Texas State Capitol,- Professor Schwartz has advocated, interned, studied and worked for state, local and regional elected officials and agencies in her long-standing focus on demystifying the administration, funding and oversight of Texas' education system.
